Green Belts obtain a working knowledge of the Lean Six Sigma roadmap to lead projects, the week 2 session focuses on the analytical methods typically used for process optimization
Lean Six Sigma Green Belts are tasked with standardizing or stabilizing processes using the DMAIC roadmap. Project leaders commonly apply between 20-50% of their time towards projects, however, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt roles and job requirements will vary between companies.
The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification is ideal for those who will be tasked with improving existing processes. These could be processes that are not standardized or don’t have established metrics. Or, the organization could be looking to reduce errors or cycle time of those processes.
6Sigma.us offers an internationally recognized Green Belt training and certification program. As part of our multiple week Black Belt option, our program may be taken alone or as the first step to earning your Black Belt. 6Sigma.us was the first organization to offer a program that allowed students with no prior experience to complete the Green Belt and Black Belt programs consecutively to earn an internationally recognized Black Belt certification.
An added benefit of the combined Green and Black Belt training option is the ability for individuals from the same organization to complete the training together even if they are working toward different belt levels. This combined format promotes synergy and encourages groups to work together, while also providing the flexibility to mix and match locations. In addition, we offer traditional classroom programs and onsite options, including Champion programs, designed for executives beginning the Lean Six Sigma implementation process.
Given the versatility of the Lean Six Sigma certification and its wide array of applications and benefits to learners, it has become a global staple for organizations striving for operational excellence. 6Sigma.us is one of the most experienced and successful providers of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certifications in the industry. During this certification, you will not only learn core concepts and methodologies like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis, etc. However, you will be equipped with all the necessary skills to take on and complete Lean Six Sigma projects.
What is a Lean Six Sigma Project?
A Lean Six Sigma project is a focused, data-driven initiative aimed at improving a specific process by reducing waste and variation. In essence, Lean Six Sigma projects seek to achieve measurable results—whether that’s increasing efficiency, boosting customer satisfaction, or driving down costs.
Through a standardized and structured approach called DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control), teams identify the causes of problems and implement sustainable solutions that are both cost-effective and impactful. They start by identifying the problem, evaluating the current condition, analyzing what can be done, executing changes, and finally creating the controls to sustain it. Through a Lean Six Sigma Project, Green Belts and Black Belts are able to prove practical knowledge they learned during the training.
In other words, a Lean Six Sigma Project is a smart, systematic way to solve business problems, save money, and improve quality, empowering teams to make data-backed decisions that lead to lasting success.
Completing the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training can also boost your career opportunities and earning potential. As companies increasingly seek professionals with this expertise, a Green Belt certification can significantly enhance your value in today’s global job market. What is Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification?
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is a certification that represents a professional’s proficiency in the principles and tools of Lean Six Sigma methodology. However, to truly understand a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, we need to look at its roots.
Six Sigma, originally developed by Motorola in the 1980s, focuses on reducing variability and defects in processes. Lean, on the other hand, originated from Toyota’s production system and emphasized eliminating waste and improving flow. The integration of these two powerful methodologies gave birth to Lean Six Sigma, a comprehensive approach to process improvement.
We’ve seen the evolution of the Green Belt role. Initially, Green Belts were viewed as support staff for Black Belts. However, over time, their role has expanded significantly.
Today, Green Belts are often the driving force behind process improvement projects in many organizations!
One question we’re frequently asked is, “What’s the difference between Yellow, Green, and Black Belts?” Here’s a quick breakdown:
Yellow Belts have a basic understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles and can support projects.
Green Belts can lead smaller projects and assist Black Belts on larger initiatives.
Black Belts are full-time process improvement experts who lead complex projects and mentor others.
Core Principles and Methodologies
At the heart of Lean Six Sigma is the DMAIC methodology: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. As a Green Belt, you’ll become intimately familiar with this problem-solving approach. Let’s quickly break it down:
Define: Identify the problem and project goals.
Measure: Collect data to establish baseline performance.
Analyze: Identify the root causes of the problem.
Improve: Develop and implement solutions.
Control: Sustain the improvements over time.
DMAIC is crucial for success in any improvement project.
Lean principles are equally important in Green Belt training and certification. These include:
Identifying value from the customer’s perspective
Mapping the value stream
Creating flow
Establishing pull
Continuously improving
As for statistical process control, it’s a fundamental tool in the Green Belt toolkit. It involves using statistical methods to monitor and control processes, ensuring they remain stable and predictable.
Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Responsibilities in Organizations
Green Belts take on diverse roles and responsibilities. Typically, a certified Lean Six Sigma Green belt’s duties include:
Leading small to medium-sized improvement projects
Collecting and analyzing data
Implementing process changes
Training team members in basic Lean Six Sigma tools
Collaboration is key in Lean Six Sigma. Green Belts often work closely with Yellow Belts, providing guidance and mentorship. They also support Black Belts on larger, more complex projects. This collaborative approach ensures that improvement efforts are aligned across the organization.
The impact of Green Belts on company performance can be significant. Green Belt projects result in substantial cost savings, improved quality, and increased customer satisfaction.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics was looking for improvements in screening methods to gain and maintain cooperation with companies that provide data.
Carol Rupley, a field economist at the Bureau, acts as a contact person for companies, non-profits, and state and local governments that provide data for the Employment Cost Index. Carol took Green Belt Six Sigma training and completed the Green Belt project certification with 6sigma.us.
Action
Her project, entitled “Improving Occupational Requirements Survey Screening Activities,” sought to analyze how to reduce the time in pre-contact screening activities. They were seeking to save approximately $75,000 based on reduced assembly time and improved screening time.
Results
Through Carol’s Green Belt project, she suggested improvements to the way they produced printed materials and the information included in printed materials. This included:
Researching field economist preferred mapping information and distance calculation, and look at additional resources as well as ways to reduce costs
Investigating improved electronic screening material and visual data and integrate with existing systems — include decoded data, maps, and web links
Looking at ways to work electronically and reduce printing
Brainstorming types of metrics needed to assess process improvements and look at existing measures of data collection
She learned that there is a preference for visual information in the screening materials. While not all ideas were applicable in this situation, they developed some useful ideas as a result.

This course helped reinforce a number of things I have learned over the years but didn't realize is was part of the Six Sigma process. Six Sigma provides tools and methodolgy for systematically improving processes by putting inplace measures to continually monitor for improvement. I am already using the tools in some of my work projects. I liked the way the course was laid out and the fact that you could go back and review modules when you might need a refresher. I'm sad about not having those modules available to me beyond the 1 year time limit. due to time constraints, I got a late start with the course work. However, I did purchase the course book and have my notes and on site black belt as a mentor.

Excellent course! The explanations were clear, concise and to the point and the pace was comfortable to follow. The examinations covered the most important topics and served as a good reminder of these. Looking forward to continue with the Black Belt course soon. Two suggestions: (1) Make a case study of the entire Green Belt Process available to the student (it doesn't matter the topic, as long as the example covers well the elements of the GB project including inputs, analyses and outputs, reports, etc.) and (2) make the course available on a pdf file besides the hardcopy.
